When we started VivaTerra four years ago, it came from our desire to create affordable, high quality eco products. At the time, sustainable, earth-friendly raw materials that met our standards were pricey. The general assumption was that anything 'green' would also be expensive. There was a good reason for that: consumers almost always had to pay a lot more to be conscientious in their purchases.
Eco-friendly & economical. But here we are, in 2008, in the midst of a gentle revolution. We're exchanging bad habits for good ones while no longer having to pay a high cost. There's no better example of that increased awareness, coupled with decreased cost, than bamboo. Who knew that one of my favorite renewable furniture materials (for its smooth grain and tensile strength) was also destined for sustainable stardom as a fabric. I knew that bamboo grows twice as fast as trees and releases 30% more oxygen, but I never thought I'd be wearing bamboo pajamas, toweling off with fluffy bamboo towels, and sleeping on soft-as-silk bamboo sheets -all at a reasonable cost. Eco-values aside, I love the fabric for its good looks, comfort and exceptionally soft, sensual hand. At last, bamboo is getting the recognition it deserves, and we can afford to luxuriate in its many attributes.
100% pure. With its surge in popularity, there were sure to be exaggerated claims and inferior versions brought to market. My preference is always for purity. That's why our bamboo sheets, towels and loungewear are all made from 100% bamboo (or bamboo blended with organic cotton), made with certified eco-friendly dyes and chlorine-free bleaching processes. With growing consumer demand, more competitively priced bamboo sources have become available with no compromise to our standards of quality and design. As bamboo underwent a makeover and transformed into the green textile of choice, I cheered. It couldn't have happened to a better grass. Bonnie Trust Dahan Founding Partner |

Cutting out the waste.1. Switch to paperless bank statements. This will also help deter identity theft. 2. Say no to the ATM receipt. If everyone did we'd save 2 billion feet of paper a year. 3. Pay your bills online. Most monthly bills can be received and paid online. 4. Double side your copies. If 1 in 4 of us did we'd save a stack of paper the diameter of the earth. 5. Bring your own coffee cup to Starbucks. Americans use 14 billion paper cups a year! What's VivaTerra doing to help? We've always printed our catalog on recycled paper with high post-consumer content (or PCW). Last year our supplier came to us with a new paper that had a whopping 79% PCW! We were impressed and switched immediately - more than doubling our catalog's PCW percentage. |
