Lauchlan Davis creates oil paintings that observe the confluence of landscape and culture in the American South. She grew up in Tennessee, graduated from the University of Virginia, and currently works in Charleston, South Carolina.

Coining the term “microabstraction,” Davis develops her signature style by working with a palette knife to achieve complex layers of pixellated textures and chromatic multiplicity. The brushstrokes are unsteady, flickering, and multifaceted; the paint is thoughtfully layered yet without clear borders or hierarchy.

Her work seeks to capture the complex subjectivities of the 21st-century South, the quiet ambiguities of contemporary femininity, and the shifting landscapes of American wildernesses.
